Field Manual
Energy Types
The realm runs on five kinds of magickal energy, measured in mana.
How the types differ
All five types follow the same rules on the grid: the same conduit capacity (15 mana per day, or 30 upgraded), the same dissipation (0.2 mana per hex), the same costs. What makes each one different is:
- Who needs it and where it comes from on a given map.
- What it reacts with when conduits of two types share or neighbor a hex. See Interactions.
- How it converts in a Transformer. Some conversions are cheap, some are wasteful, and some aren't possible at all.
Each type also has its own pulse animation along the conduit, which is how you tell them apart at a glance. See Pulses and flow.
The five types
Every type is measured in the same unit, mana. Numbers in parentheses below are mana per day: what a source produces, or what a customer needs.
Raw magic, drawn from ley lines. Arcana is in the most demand of any type, and it's the only one that can be transformed into every other type.
Heat for forges, academies and markets. Fire reacts with every other type, so it's the type most likely to cause trouble when routed carelessly.
For farms, mushrooms, academies and thirsty dragons. Water is the hardest type to make if a map doesn't have it: Arcana is the only thing a Transformer can turn into Water.
Solid, slow, dependable. Earth is a small part of many recipes and the key ingredient in two of the best money-making interactions.
Fuel for bazaar stalls and town lamps. Plenty of maps have no Gas Pocket at all, so gas often has to come from a hybrid or a Transformer.
Demand figures above are each building's standard needs. Individual operations sometimes change them, so always check the building's tooltip in-game.
Conversion chart
How much input a Transformer needs to make 1 mana of output. A dash means that conversion isn't possible, and any mana sent into it is lost.
| From ↓ To → | Arcana | Fire | Water | Earth | Gas |
| Arcana | · | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Fire | – | · | – | 3 | 1.5 |
| Water | 2 | – | · | 1.5 | – |
| Earth | – | 3 | – | · | 2 |
| Gas | 3 | 1.5 | – | – | · |
Example: a full conduit of 15 mana of fire becomes 10 mana of gas, or 5 mana of earth.
Pulses and flow
Mana travels as glowing pulses, and each type has its own look. The in-game Field Manual lists these figures, but they only describe the animation. They don't change how much mana is delivered.
| Type | Pulse rate | Flow speed | Pulse size | Pulse shape |
| Arcana | 2.5/sec | 3.0 hex/sec | 5 | shimmering orb |
| Fire | 4.0/sec | 4.0 hex/sec | 4 | flickering cluster |
| Water | 1.5/sec | 2.0 hex/sec | 6 | stretched droplet |
| Earth | 1.0/sec | 1.5 hex/sec | 7 | square block |
| Gas | 2.0/sec | 2.5 hex/sec | 5 | scattered dots |
A conduit running above 80% of its capacity pulses faster and glows brighter as a warning that it's nearly full.
Colorblind mode
Turn on Colorblind Mode in Settings for a palette that avoids red/green confusion:
- Arcana stays purple and Water stays blue.
- Fire becomes orange, Earth becomes brown, and Gas becomes bright yellow.
- The Content ring on customers turns blue instead of green.
